802 Gives Black

a practice of collective care for our liberation

a sou sou is a community practice found throughout parts of west Africa and the African diaspora in which people regularly contribute to a shared pool of resources that circulates among members of the group. while every community practices it differently, the guiding principle is shared responsibility. each person's contribution strengthens the whole, and the whole, in turn, cares for each person.

for generations, communities have practiced sou sou to help purchase land, begin businesses, care for family members, celebrate important life moments, respond to emergencies, and invest in collective futures. this is where our name comes from!

802 Gives Black draws inspiration from the sou sou. every contribution joins with hundreds of others to sustain the work of cultivating our living Black archive and sanctuary at SUSU.

this Black August, we are inviting our community to come together to raise $100,000 in support of SUSU’s work cultivating a living Black archive and sanctuary through land stewardship, healing retreats, food sovereignty, cultural practice, and community gathering.

every gift makes these ways of being and healing possible.
